Earth
Not just the planet upon which we reside, but also the most dense of the five Alchemical Elements. Equated with the properties of the substance lead, that which is lethargic, heavy, inert. In Esoteric Astrology the Earth is seen as a non-sacred planet ruled by the third Ray of Active Intelligence.
Ectoplasm
The substance of the fourth etheric subplane, which is closest to the dense physical plane, thus its availability for use by those with mediumistic tendencies. This occurs as a consequence of having psychic “holes” within the medium’s etheric body, through which this phenomena (“materialisations”) can appear, and through which all types of obsessing entities can also manifest.
Eden
Garden of. The home of primal humanity, as depicted in the book of Genesis. This garden was situated upon mental and astral realms.
Ego, the
This is a term for the Soul as an individualised unit or sphere of consciousness, within the ocean of consciousness in which it resides. See also Soul, Causal Body, Solar Angel.
Egoic Groups
They are the groupings of the human Causal forms existing upon the abstracted realms of the mind (The higher three subplanes.) They exist in 49 groupings, according to the major Ray and subray quality to which each Soul belongs.
Egoic Lotus
The three grouping of three petals (= 9), of Knowledge, Love, and Sacrifice-Will, to the Causal Form, and which hide a central bud of three petals, plus the radiant “jewel within the heart of the lotus”.
Eighth sphere
The term used to designate that sphere of containment basically created by human folly and which can be related to a Hell state. It is not one of the seven planes, but an aspect of the three lowest ones. It is literally a prison for members of the dark brotherhood, who, having transgressed the law and finding no place in the present evolutionary era, must wait for the duration of the symbolic 1,000 years – Rev. 20:2-3 – for the oncoming of the appropriate cycle wherein they can once again find scope for evolutionary attainment. The “bottomless pit” where the Dragon, the old serpent, the Devil and Satan were cast into mentioned in Rev. 20:3 – being but a reference to the “eighth sphere”. Here also are contained the “failures” of any evolutionary epoch, the storehouse of substance to be utilised in the future cycles of materialistic endeavour of a Logos.
It is veiled by the symbolism of the Gorgon Medusa’s head, with hissing serpents for hair, which Perseus cut off and put into a sack, and which would turn those beings who looked upon it into stone. It is also veiled by the superimposed splenic centre, the function of which is to sort out, direct, and store prana, rejecting that which is no longer usable to the system. The rejected prana effectively passes into the eighth sphere. The eighth sphere is thus “the door where evil dwells” from one perspective, for it is that which contains the dark pranas of the system. The full and new Moon cycles constitutes the means associated with the opening and closing of this door.
Elementals
These are elementary Devic lives, the lesser builders of the four Elements, the earthy Gnomes, fiery salamanders, airy sylphs, and the watery undines can be considered part of their ranks. They are omnipresent and exist in countless groupings, as they embody the substance of all that is tangible on the physical plane. They are the elemental forces in nature controlled by the greater Deva builders. They are aspects of the “army of the Voice”, and are considered the “blinded lives”, for they see not, but respond automatically to mantric sound.
Elementaries
The left over astral shells of the deceased, who have gone on to higher spheres, but whose past shells have been taken over by elemental Devic forces and who often play at being human. They are generally contacted by trance mediums, who mistake them as real persons. They are also the “spirits” or dæmons that obsess humans that have allowed them into their auric spheres.
Elohim
Also Alhim. A Hebrew term. The seven Creative Emanations or Spirits from God. In Genesis they are the Cause of the seven Days of Creation.
Elves
Elemental Devic lives, nature spirits, of an earthy and etheric nature. They are not usually found clothed in human form or in human attire, but often have distorted human features, and are usually quite small (to six inches in height). They are generally seen as more or less amorphous masses of etheric substance and quickly blend into the portion of the plant kingdom of which they are a part and which they help build, colouring the flowers, building the fruits and vegetables which we consume, and in general embodying the verdant green of Nature’s Kingdom. Ephesus
H.P. Blavatsky states in her Theosophical Glossary that Ephesus was “famous for its great metaphysical College where Occultism (Gnosis) and Platonic philosophy were taught in the days of the Apostle Paul. A city regarded as the focus of secret sciences, and that Gnosis, or Wisdom, which is the antagonist of the perversion of Christo-Esotericism to this day.”
Eros
The field of desire. The personified procreative force in nature. The Greek Deity of this name.
Esoteric
That which is hidden or veiled, hence the concealed Wisdom. It concerns that which is subjective, hidden, but which affects all outer phenomena. The word esoteric here definitely refers to “The Mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints”. (See Col. 1:24-29 for the full quotation.)
Things esoteric can also refer to that associated with the realm of enlightened Being and all the conscious patternings of energy interplay (mandalas) produced by that realm (or kingdom). Such a kingdom exists, the members of which are comprised of the world’s past sages and realised beings, some of which have reincarnated, others still subjectivised. They can be contacted by the enlightened Mind meditatively geared towards a field of service. They are the externalised demonstration of the inner guru, or Master, the Voice of Silence, or “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Col. 1:27).

A student of the Esoteric Sciences.
Esoteric Wisdom or Sciences
The Wisdom teachings that have existed since time immemorial and which has been veiled by the symbolism of the world’s myths, legends, religious terminology and allegories throughout the ages. It is literally the objective expression of subjective Laws, of the potencies and forces that have been built into the fabric of space by the greater Mind (of God), and which condition all outer seeming, indeed, causes all that we know to come to be. The esoteric sciences are built upon the paradigm of the Real, the Good and True, that exist on the inner realms. They are an effect of the Mind (of God) actively expressing Itself as the evolutionary patternings of all embodied forms (of the kingdoms of Nature) and World play of cause and effect in which we all live. It is the hidden wisdom that has always existed, since even before the foundation of this world.
“Howbeit we speak of wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory.” 1Cor. 2:6-7 ff.
Ether
The substance that underlies the dense physical body. It is the true medium that allows the transmission of all types of energy through space, even through a vacuum. See etheric body.
Etheric body
The body of vitality. This is the archetype or mould upon which the dense physical form is built. It is the vehicle of prana, and is part of the physical plane, acting as a medium of transmission of energies from more subtle realms. In its densest expression it is visible as a transparent (sometimes bluish grey-purple) band about one quarter to one eighth of an inch around the body. It appears as a tenuous type of liquid plastic interpenetrating all dense matter. It is often seen by those under the influence of psychotropic drugs and by clairvoyants, and is the medium moulded by the visual patternings and memories in the brain to cause hallucinogenic images.
As it is the intermediary between the subjective world and the dense physical body, the etheric body acts as a conveyor of energy and vitality, the consciousness aspect from one dimension of perception to the next. Thus it embodies the channels that convey the electrochemical impulses from the nerves to the brain, plus their subjective counterparts, the nadi and chakra system. There are four types of ethers, each of increasing subtlety, or etheric subplanes to the dense physical plane. They thus make a septenary with the dense, liquid, and gaseous subplanes of the dense physical. They are the lower correspondences (reflections) of the four cosmic Etheric subplanes – Buddhi, Atma, Anu¬padaka, and Adi. This point should be well understood by all esoteric students.
Ezekiel
Meaning “God strengthens” in Hebrew. Ezekiel is one of the Archangels, or Raja Lords, that constitute the fingers of the Hand of Varuna. As such He embodies the substance of the third plane of perception, Atma and the third subplanes of each of the other planes. He embodies the qualities of the fifth Alchemical Element, Aether. He is the fiery finger of the Lord and en-flames or “strengthens” the substance of the mental plane. The colour attributed to this Deva Lord is green.
